Simple vs. Variable Products
What's the Difference?

Every handmade item deserves a listing that reflects the care behind it. But when setting up your products, it can be confusing to know: Should you choose "Simple" or "Variable"?

Here’s how to tell the difference:

Simple Product

A Simple Product is one main version of your item. You can still offer add-ons like personalization or gift wrap, but the core product stays the same.

Use this when:

  • You sell one version of your product
  • Any options like name engraving or blessing cards don’t dramatically affect stock or pricing
  • You don’t need to track inventory for each variation

Example: A hand-knitted challah cover with optional embroidered name. It’s one product with custom touches added on.

Variable Product

A Variable Product lets you create different versions of the same item, each with its own price, image, or stock level. This works well when your item comes in different sizes, colors, or styles that need to be tracked or priced separately.

Use this when:

  • Your product comes in multiple forms like Small, Medium, Large
  • Each version has a different price
  • You need to track stock or show separate photos for each option

Example: A ceramic bowl available in 3 sizes or glazes, with different photos, prices, or quantities for each option.

Add-Ons vs Variations

Our Recommendation

For most listings, start with a Simple Product and add-ons. Only use Variable Products when you have truly distinct versions of your item that need separate pricing, photos, or inventory tracking.
